Description

Taxonomic position. The grape flea beetle, known scientifically as Altica foliacea, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. Like other members of the Altica genus, it is characterized by thickened hind femora, which provide the ability to jump forcefully when threatened, earning the common name 'flea beetle'.

Host crops. This pest primarily targets plants within the Vitaceae family, most notably cultivated grapevines. While they can be found on wild relatives, commercial vineyards are highly susceptible, especially during the early growth stages when foliage is tender and vulnerable to initial insect attacks.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Altica foliacea includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults overwinter in leaf litter, soil crevices, or under loose bark. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on developing buds and young leaves, subsequently laying eggs that hatch into larvae, which continue the damage process.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The injury is manifested as small, circular 'shot-hole' perforations in the leaves. As the insect population increases, the damage can become severe, leading to significant defoliation. This loss of photosynthetic capacity directly impacts the vine's physiological vigor, sugar accumulation in berries, and overall production quality.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling the grape flea beetle. Cultural practices, such as clearing debris in the fall and winter to eliminate overwintering sites, significantly reduce initial populations. When threshold levels are exceeded, selective chemical control with systemic or contact insecticides may be necessary during the peak activity period of the adults.
