Strawberry flea beetle

Systematic position. The Strawberry flea beetle (Altica ignita) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is recognized for its metallic, shiny appearance, which can range from copper-bronze to deep blue or green. As a member of the flea beetle group, it possesses enlarged hind legs that allow it to jump when disturbed.

Host plants and damage. This pest is polyphagous, capable of feeding on various plants. While it is often associated with strawberries and related berries, it can also infest various garden vegetables and wild host plants. The presence of these beetles is particularly detrimental during the early growth stages of plants when they are most vulnerable to defoliation.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults typically overwinter under soil debris or leaf litter, emerging in the spring to feed and lay eggs. Larvae feed on the foliage throughout the season, and pupation typically takes place in the soil. Multiple generations can occur depending on the regional climate conditions.

Type of damage. Adults and larvae damage plants by chewing small, characteristic "shot holes" in the foliage. When the beetle population is high, these small holes coalesce, leading to severe leaf skeletonization. This reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, stunts its development, and can significantly decrease fruit yield and overall plant vigor.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Altica ignita populations in agricultural settings.

• Removal of plant debris and weeds that provide overwintering sites.
• Rotation of crops to disrupt the beetle's life cycle.
• Application of chemical insecticides when monitoring confirms threshold levels are exceeded.
• Promotion of rapid plant growth through optimal fertilization and irrigation.
• Use of row covers in smaller garden settings to provide physical barriers.
