Description

The Grape flea beetle (Altica probata) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This insect is identified as a specific pest of grapevine plants, capable of causing localized but significant defoliation in various viticultural regions.

The host range is primarily focused on Vitis species, both cultivated and wild. The beetle feeds on the vegetative parts of the vine, specifically the leaves, which serve as the primary source of nutrients for both adult beetles and their larvae during their development.

The biological cycle follows a typical pattern for leaf beetles, with adults overwintering in protected sites such as soil debris, leaf litter, or crevices in the vine bark. Emergence occurs in the spring, coinciding with the bud burst phase, which is when the plants are most vulnerable to initial feeding damage by the adults.

The economic damage manifests as extensive skeletonization of the foliage. Adult beetles create small, distinct holes in the leaf blades, while larvae may cause more severe localized stripping of leaf tissue.
