Willow flea beetle

Systematic position. Altica sylvia is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. Commonly known as a type of flea beetle, it is a specialized insect that predominantly inhabits environments populated by specific deciduous trees, affecting their physiological well-being.

Host plants and damage. This species primarily infests plants of the Salicaceae family, particularly willows and poplars. Both adults and larvae feed on the foliage. The damage manifests as numerous small, irregular holes or the partial skeletonization of leaves, which inhibits the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Altica sylvia is synchronized with the growth of its host trees. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or leaf litter. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on developing buds and foliage. Females subsequently lay eggs on the undersides of leaves, and after hatching, the larvae go through several developmental stages before pupating in the soil.

Economic importance. While localized in its distribution, the willow flea beetle can reach population densities that cause significant defoliation. This is especially problematic in nursery settings, ornamental plantings, and forestry plantations, where reduced leaf area leads to stunted growth, loss of aesthetic value, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors.

Management strategies. Effective control of this pest requires an integrated approach to minimize chemical inputs while maintaining plant health:

• Sanitation practices such as removing leaf litter during autumn to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Regular monitoring of tree canopies to detect early signs of feeding activity.
• Application of targeted insecticides during the larval feeding stage to disrupt the life cycle.
• Encouraging biological control agents, including predatory beetles and birds, to maintain natural balance.
