Description
The oak spider mite (Amphitetranychus quercivorus) is a member of the Tetranychidae family, recognized as a significant pest of oak forests and ornamental plantings. These mites are extremely small, often appearing as tiny moving dots on the undersides of leaves, where they establish their feeding colonies.
The primary host plants for this species are various oak species (Quercus spp.). While they are specialized feeders, their impact can be devastating to tree vigor, particularly during hot and dry summer months when the tree is already under drought stress, allowing the mite population to thrive.
The life cycle of the mite is rapid, consisting of several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. As the temperature rises, the developmental time shortens, allowing the mite to complete several generations within a single growing season. Overwintering occurs in the adult female stage, hiding in the bark crevices or leaf litter.
The damage is caused by the mite piercing the leaf cells and extracting chlorophyll. This results in stippling, chlorosis, and eventually browning of the foliage. Heavy infestations cause premature leaf drop and thin the tree canopy, which severely reduces the tree's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, weakening its overall health.
Management strategies require a combination of approaches. Cultural practices, such as removing fallen leaves where mites overwinter, can reduce initial spring populations. In severe cases, the use of acaricides is necessary. It is crucial to choose products that are effective against all life stages of the mite to prevent rapid population resurgence.
