Description

Systematic classification. Bryobia (Bryobia) belongs to the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and family Tetranychidae (spider mites). These pests are widely recognized in both commercial orchards and greenhouse operations. Unlike some other spider mite species, they are often characterized by their distinct reddish-brown coloration and specific host preferences, making them a significant agricultural concern globally.

Host plants. Bryobia mites are polyphagous, meaning they infest a diverse range of botanical species. Primary hosts include fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and almond. They also cause substantial damage to berry bushes, grapevines, and various ornamental plants. In greenhouses, they frequently attack vegetables, where the controlled environment provides ideal conditions for rapid population growth throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and adult. The overwintering phase usually occurs as eggs, typically laid in bark crevices or near leaf buds on host trees. As temperatures rise in the spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding immediately. The pest can produce several generations during a single growing season, with the pace of development closely linked to environmental temperature and relative humidity levels.

Nature of damage and harm. The mites feed by piercing the plant epidermis and consuming the cell contents, which leads to distinct physical symptoms:

  • Development of tiny, pale, stippled spots on the upper leaf surface.
  • Chlorosis (yellowing), bronzing, and eventual necrosis of the foliage.
  • Premature leaf drop, which weakens the plant and reduces overall yields.
  • Reduced fruit size and quality, potentially leading to poor marketability of the crop.
Heavy infestations can cause significant physiological stress to the host plants, making them more susceptible to other diseases and environmental pressures.

Control measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management approach. Early spring applications of horticultural oils are essential to destroy overwintering eggs before they hatch. During the active growing season, if monitoring confirms threshold levels are exceeded, the use of selective acaricides is recommended. Cultural practices, such as maintaining healthy tree bark, removing infested weeds, and optimizing irrigation, are also vital to minimize the favorable conditions required for mite population surges.
