Turkestan termite

The Turkestan termite (Anacanthotermes turkestanicus) belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Hodotermitidae. It is a significant pest primarily found in the arid regions of Central Asia. These termites are known for their subterranean lifestyle, building deep nesting systems that allow them to endure harsh, dry climates.

This species poses a major threat to various agricultural crops, including fruit trees, vineyards, and cotton plants. Beyond living plants, they are highly destructive to wooden infrastructure, agricultural equipment, and stored grain products, often causing structural instability in farm buildings.

The biology of the species revolves around a highly organized caste system consisting of workers, soldiers, and reproductives. Following the swarming season, which typically occurs in spring, the termites establish new subterranean colonies. Their ability to remain hidden makes them particularly difficult to eradicate once a colony is well-established.

Damage is characterized by the excavation of galleries within the root systems and stems of the host plants. As they feed on cellulose, the structural integrity of the plant is compromised, leading to wilting, stunted growth, or complete collapse. The damage is often internal, meaning the external signs may appear only when the plant is severely weakened.
