Southern harvester termite

Hodotermes mossambicus

Description

Systematic position and distribution. The Southern harvester termite (Hodotermes mossambicus) is a member of the order Isoptera and the family Hodotermitidae. It is recognized as a primary agricultural pest across the arid and semi-arid regions of Southern Africa. Unlike many other termite species, they do not build prominent above-ground mounds, opting instead for complex underground gallery systems, which makes them difficult to monitor.

Affected crops. This species is a significant consumer of plant biomass. It causes severe damage to natural rangelands and grasslands, which often leads to land degradation. Additionally, Hodotermes mossambicus poses a major threat to crops such as maize, wheat, and sorghum. Their foraging behavior allows them to strip vegetation from large areas, often leading to total crop failure if left unmanaged.

Biology and life cycle. The colony of Hodotermes mossambicus functions through a complex caste system. Workers are specialized for foraging and are predominantly nocturnal, avoiding heat and light. They venture out to cut plant stems and grass leaves, carrying them deep into their underground chambers. Colonization flights typically occur during the rainy season, when alates emerge to mate and establish new nesting sites.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The primary damage involves the active harvesting of living and dead plant material. By cutting plants at the soil surface and storing them underground, these termites deplete soil cover and reduce grazing capacity. The hidden nature of their work means that fields can be decimated rapidly without early warning, often resulting in significant economic losses for agricultural businesses.

Control measures. Managing Hodotermes mossambicus is challenging due to their subterranean nesting habits. Effective management strategies include:

  • Application of slow-acting toxic baits that are carried by workers back to the nest to eliminate the colony.
  • Soil treatment with registered insecticides in areas of high activity.
  • Integrated pest management practices, including maintaining good soil health and monitoring, to prevent the establishment of new colonies.
