Anagrus atomus is a minute parasitic wasp belonging to the family Mymaridae, commonly known as "fairyflies." It is a vital natural enemy in many agricultural systems, primarily known for its role in suppressing populations of leafhoppers (Cicadellidae) that can cause damage to various fruit crops and vineyards.

Systematically, it belongs to the order Hymenoptera. These wasps are among the smallest insects in the world, with adults reaching less than one millimeter in length. Despite their tiny size, they are highly efficient at locating the host eggs embedded in the plant tissue, utilizing specialized chemical signals to find their prey.

The primary hosts of Anagrus atomus include several species of leafhoppers that feed on grapevines, pome fruits, and various ornamental trees. By depositing its own egg inside the leafhopper egg, the wasp larva consumes the host embryo from within, effectively terminating the development of the pest and replacing it with the emerging adult parasite.

In warmer climates, it can complete multiple generations within a single season, allowing it to quickly colonize new areas and provide sustained control of pest populations. This high reproductive rate is a cornerstone of its efficacy in integrated pest management programs.
