Description
The peach twig borer (Anarsia lineatella) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is widely recognized as a primary threat to stone fruit production, causing substantial damage to both the vegetative growth and the fruit yield of the host plants.
This pest mainly infests peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, and almonds. Its ability to complete multiple generations within a single growing season makes it particularly challenging for orchard managers to contain, requiring constant vigilance throughout the spring and summer months.
The life cycle begins with the overwintering of young larvae in protected hibernacula located in the bark crevices of the trees. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and shoots. Throughout the season, subsequent generations shift their focus toward maturing fruit.
The damage caused by Anarsia is distinctive: larvae bore into the tips of tender shoots, causing them to wilt and die back, which is known as "flagging." Later generations tunnel directly into the fruit near the stem end, causing internal decay and rendering the produce unmarketable.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this moth. Strategies include monitoring adult flight patterns using pheromone traps, pruning infested shoots in early summer, and applying targeted insecticides when populations reach the economic injury level. Biological control through the introduction of natural predators is also a viable component of the strategy.
