Fifteen-spotted lady beetle

Anatis quinquedecimpunctata

Description

The fifteen-spotted lady beetle (Anatis quinquedecimpunctata) is a member of the Coccinellidae family within the order Coleoptera. While many lady beetles are beneficial predators, this particular species can impact plant health in agricultural and nursery settings, feeding on leaf tissue and affecting the overall vitality of deciduous trees and shrubs.

The species primarily targets deciduous hosts, including birch, willow, linden, and poplar trees. In nursery production, these beetles can cause noticeable damage to foliage, which affects the cosmetic appearance of ornamental plants and can stress young saplings, making them more vulnerable to subsequent pest attacks or environmental stressors.

The biological cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults overwinter in leaf litter, under bark, or in other sheltered areas. With the onset of spring temperatures, they emerge to feed and reproduce. The larvae are active feeders and are responsible for a significant portion of the foliage damage observed during the late spring and early summer months.

Damage is characterized by the skeletonization of leaves and localized grazing of plant tissues. This feeding behavior reduces the total photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leads to leaf discoloration, and can cause premature leaf drop if the infestation levels are high. Such damage is particularly concerning for young or newly transplanted stock that requires maximum leaf surface area for establishing root systems.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for this beetle include:

  • Good sanitation practices, such as clearing leaf litter where adults overwinter.
  • Monitoring pest populations to apply controls only when injury thresholds are exceeded.
  • Using biological control agents that target beetle larvae.
  • Application of targeted insecticides in nurseries when damage significantly affects plant growth or marketability.
