Ancylostoma caninum is a parasitic nematode belonging to the order Strongylida and the family Ancylostomatidae. While it is not a botanical pest, it is a significant factor in veterinary management within agricultural settings, specifically affecting the health and efficiency of working dogs and livestock protection animals.

The life cycle of this parasite begins with eggs passed in feces, which hatch in the soil into rhabditiform larvae. After molting, these larvae reach the infective filariform stage. They reside in the topsoil, waiting for a host to pass by, at which point they can penetrate the skin or be ingested via contaminated feed or water.

The impact of Ancylostoma caninum is mainly physiological damage to the host. As blood feeders, these worms cause iron-deficiency anemia, leading to lethargy, reduced endurance, and stunted growth in affected animals. In a farming environment, this limits the effectiveness of farm dogs and increases costs for medication and veterinary care.

Damage symptoms often include poor coat condition, pale mucous membranes, and digestive disturbances in animals. Severe infestations can be fatal, particularly in young or immunocompromised animals, creating a major challenge for husbandry management where high hygiene standards are required.

  • Frequent cleaning of animal enclosures to prevent the buildup of larvae in the soil.
