Bunostomum trigonocephalum, commonly known as the sheep hookworm, is a parasitic nematode belonging to the order Strongylida and the family Ancylostomatidae. It is a major health threat to sheep and goats, residing primarily in the small intestine where it acts as a blood-feeding parasite.
In the context of agriculture, this organism acts as a harmful parasite to livestock. Its presence in a flock significantly degrades animal health and productivity, leading to stunted growth in lambs, poor wool quality, and reduced milk production, which negatively impacts the overall economic viability of the farm.
The biological life cycle of B. trigonocephalum is external-internal. Eggs are passed in feces onto the pasture. Under favorable conditions of moisture and warmth, they develop into infective third-stage larvae. These larvae are unique as they can penetrate the skin of the host directly or be ingested while grazing.
The damage caused by the hookworm is primarily due to chronic blood loss, resulting in iron-deficiency anemia. Affected animals often display physical signs such as pale mucous membranes, significant weight loss, submandibular edema (often called "bottle jaw"), and poor overall condition, which may lead to high mortality rates if untreated.
Effective management and protection strategies focus on disrupting the parasite's life cycle. Key methods include strategic drenching with anthelmintic drugs, rotation of pastures to break the contamination cycle, and keeping bedding and housing areas dry. Regular fecal testing is essential for monitoring and early detection of infections.
