Oak collar gall wasp

The oak collar gall wasp (Latin: Andricus collaris) is a species of gall wasp within the family Cynipidae (order Hymenoptera). These insects are renowned for their ability to induce the formation of abnormal plant growths known as galls. They are specifically associated with oak species, where they complete their life cycles while impacting the health of their host plants.

These insects primarily target the buds and young shoots of oak trees. When a female wasp deposits her eggs into the plant tissue, it triggers a physiological response in the tree. This interaction leads to the creation of distinctive collar-shaped galls. Inside these structures, the larvae find both a sheltered environment and a continuous food source derived from the host tree's nutrients.

The biology of Andricus collaris involves a complex cycle often featuring alternating generations. The transformation from egg to adult wasp takes place entirely within the gall. The timing of their emergence is tightly linked to the oak tree's development phases, ensuring the presence of fresh plant tissue for the next generation of larvae to establish new galls.

Damage to the host tree manifests as stunted growth, branch deformation, and reduced overall vitality. While individual galls may seem harmless, heavy infestations can lead to significant stress on the tree, making it more susceptible to secondary pests and various environmental stressors. Significant outbreaks can decrease the aesthetic and ecological value of forest or ornamental plantings.
