Angitia fenestralis (scientifically accepted as Diadegma fenestrale) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Ichneumonidae. It is a highly specialized parasitoid wasp widely recognized in agronomy as a beneficial insect rather than a crop pest. This species plays a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance in cruciferous crop fields.

The primary host for this parasitoid is the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), one of the most destructive pests for cabbage, kale, and other Brassica species. By parasitizing the larvae of the diamondback moth, Angitia fenestralis acts as a natural biological control agent, significantly reducing the pest load without any negative impact on the harvest.

Regarding its life cycle, the adult female wasp searches for diamondback moth larvae to lay her eggs inside them. The wasp larva develops inside the host, eventually killing it before it can reach the pupal stage. After the larva finishes consuming the host, it spins a characteristic net-like cocoon within the remnants of the moth's original silken web on the plant leaf.

Because they feed on floral nectar as adults, they do not damage leaves, stems, or fruits of vegetables, and they are vital for controlling populations of primary herbivores.

  • Prioritize the use of selective biopesticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which are safer for parasitoids compared to synthetic organophosphates or pyrethroids.
  • Implement "refuge" zones or wildflower strips nearby fields to provide nectar sources for adult wasps.
  • Avoid unnecessary calendar-based spraying, as it often disrupts the natural synchronization between the parasitoid and its host.
  • Regularly monitor the rate of parasitism in the field to determine if chemical intervention is actually necessary.
