Woodworm beetle
Anobium
Description
The genus Anobium belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae. These insects are significant technical pests that specialize in damaging various types of wood, including furniture, antiques, structural timber, and sometimes stored dry plant products.
While they infest weakened trees in the wild, in an agricultural and residential context, they pose a serious threat to wooden warehouses, barns, livestock facilities, and homes. The larvae are responsible for the vast majority of the damage, as they tunnel through wooden elements, gradually destroying their integrity from within.
The life cycle of the woodworm beetle consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female lays eggs in cracks or pores of the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow deep into the material, where they can feed for several years, depending on environmental moisture and temperature conditions. Pupation occurs in special chambers constructed near the surface of the wood.
Damage is characterized by numerous small exit holes (1–2 mm in diameter) on the surface of the wood and the accumulation of fine, powdery wood dust known as "frass." The pest compromises the structural strength of timber, turning the interior into a hollowed-out network, which can lead to the total collapse of construction members in severe infestations.
- Treating timber with professional wood preservatives and fungicides
- Regular monitoring of wooden structures for emergence holes
- Managing humidity levels in storage areas to prevent damp wood
- Professional fumigation for heavily infested areas
- Replacing structurally compromised wood components
Effective management requires keeping wood dry, as woodworm beetles thrive in high-moisture environments (typically above 12-15% moisture content). Once an infestation is detected, contact and systemic insecticides should be applied, often combined with specialized fumigation techniques to eliminate larvae and adults living deep within the timber.
