Cotton leafworm

The cotton leafworm (Anomis flava) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This moth species is primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, where it poses a persistent threat to various economically important crops that belong to the Malvaceae family.

The host plant range of Anomis flava is relatively specific, focusing heavily on cotton, okra, kenaf, and hibiscus. These plants provide both the necessary nutrients for larval development and the physical environment for resting and pupation. Because of its preference for commercial fiber and vegetable crops, this insect is closely monitored in agricultural production zones.

The life history of this moth includes the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs individually on the underside of leaves. Once hatched, the larvae feed voraciously, progressing through several instars before pupating. The duration of the life cycle is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and relative humidity, often allowing for multiple generations per growing season.

Damage caused by the larvae is characterized by the skeletonization of leaves. As the larvae grow larger, they consume the leaf tissue entirely, leaving only the primary veins. This intensive defoliation reduces the plant's capacity for photosynthesis, directly impacting vegetative growth and reducing the yield of fiber or fruit. In severe infestations, growth is stunted and overall plant health is severely compromised.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Anomis flava effectively. Suggested strategies include:
