Texas cotton leafworm

The Texas cotton leafworm (Anomis texana) is an insect species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. This moth is recognized as a specific phytophagous pest whose larvae feed on the foliage of various host plants, primarily impacting agricultural production in warm climates.

Cotton (Gossypium) serves as the primary host plant for Anomis texana. Larval feeding activity is concentrated on the leaves, which directly impacts the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, ultimately leading to reduced yields in both quality and quantity of cotton fibers.

The biological life cycle of this species encompasses complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle is highly dependent on environmental temperature. Female moths typically oviposit on the underside of leaves, and larvae undergo several instar stages, feeding aggressively before pupating in protected areas, such as the soil or within curled foliage.

Damage symptoms begin with the larvae skeletonizing the leaf tissue, leaving only the primary veins intact. As the larvae mature, they consume more leaf mass, often leading to total defoliation of the cotton plants. Severe infestations weaken the plants and can lead to shedding of squares and bolls, significantly impacting the harvest.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Anomis texana. Strategies include maintaining clean fields by removing volunteer cotton and weeds, as well as timing insecticide applications to coincide with the most vulnerable larval stages. Scouting is critical to identify early infestations and prevent population outbreaks.
