Furniture carpet beetle
Anthrenus flavipes
Description
The furniture carpet beetle (lat. Anthrenus flavipes) is a destructive pest of stored products, belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Dermestidae. This insect is widely recognized as a major threat to both plant-derived stocks and various animal-based materials, causing significant economic losses globally.
This pest infests a diverse range of materials, including grain products, dried fruits, seeds, as well as fabrics, upholstery, leather, and furs. Due to its diet flexibility, it is frequently encountered in warehouses, museums, and food storage facilities where it thrives on protein-rich residues and organic inventory.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, characterized by intense feeding on substrate fibers. Larvae are highly resilient and capable of surviving for long periods under unfavorable conditions, making them particularly difficult to eliminate.
Damage caused by the furniture carpet beetle includes irregular holes and surface destruction in materials. Larvae consume the internal structure of fabrics and products, leaving behind frass and discarded larval skins. This feeding activity not only compromises product integrity but also results in significant contamination of stored commodities.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. Key strategies include maintaining high sanitation standards, sealing cracks and crevices in storage areas, and using monitoring traps. In cases of heavy infestation, professional chemical control, such as fumigation or targeted insecticide applications, is necessary to prevent further spread.
