The ocean carpet beetle (Anthrenus oceanicus) is a beetle belonging to the family Dermestidae within the order Coleoptera. While commonly known as a household pest that targets textiles and animal-based materials, it can also pose a significant threat in storage facilities where plant products, grains, or dried foodstuffs are kept in proximity to organic detritus.

The biology of Anthrenus oceanicus follows a holometabolous development cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the primary cause of damage, characterized by dense hair and a high appetite for keratin-containing materials. Under favorable conditions, the lifecycle can be rapid, leading to multiple generations per year in warm, dry storage environments.

The damage caused by these beetles is often insidious. Larvae feed on various substrates, often creating irregular holes and surface damage. In warehouse settings, they are known to infest contaminated grain stocks, processed feeds, and seed storage, where they feed on proteins and organic remnants, ultimately leading to significant loss of product quality and weight.

Economic impact from this pest is associated with the degradation of stored inventories. The presence of larvae, exuviae (molted skins), and fecal pellets significantly lowers the sanitary status of the goods, often leading to total rejection of batches in international trade. Moreover, they are difficult to eliminate once an infestation is deeply established in warehouse structural cracks.

Control strategies for the ocean carpet beetle prioritize integrated pest management (IPM) practices to minimize chemical intervention. Key protective measures include:
