The South European toothcarp (Aphanius fasciatus) is a small fish belonging to the Cyprinodontidae family, within the Cyprinodontiformes order. While often studied for its ecological role, in certain agricultural environments, particularly within rice-growing regions, this species is recognized as a potential aquatic pest that interferes with irrigation systems and crop establishment.

This species is native to brackish and coastal waters across the Mediterranean and Black Sea basins. Its ability to colonize shallow, warm water environments makes irrigation canals and flooded rice paddies ideal habitats. Once established within these man-made aquatic systems, the fish can reach significant population densities, impacting the surrounding flora.

The biological cycle of Aphanius fasciatus is characterized by high adaptability to fluctuating salinity levels and water temperatures. Breeding occurs throughout the warmer months, ensuring that various age groups of the fish are present during the crucial early stages of rice development. Their diet is varied, consisting of plankton and detritus, but they also exhibit foraging behavior that can harm aquatic vegetation.

The primary damage caused by this species is the consumption of young rice sprouts and the mechanical disruption of tender root systems. By foraging on newly germinated crops, the fish cause thinning of the stands, which directly results in reduced yields. Furthermore, their movement stirs up bottom sediments, creating turbid water conditions that limit photosynthesis for submersed or young rice plants.

Management strategies focus on physical exclusion and habitat manipulation rather than chemical intervention. Preventing the fish from entering the irrigation system through the installation of fine-mesh screens at intake points is the most effective approach. Additionally, manipulating the water depth in rice paddies through periodic draining can help disrupt the fish's breeding cycles and limit their population within the agricultural plots.
