Description

Fundulus, commonly known as killifish, belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes and the family Fundulidae. While often kept for research or as ornamental fish, in agricultural settings such as rice paddies or integrated wetland farming, they can act as pests by disrupting the substrate and damaging crop development in flooded environments.

The primary crops affected by the activity of Fundulus are rice and other semi-aquatic plants. By foraging in the sediment, these fish disturb the soil structure around the roots of young plants, causing detachment or burial of seedlings, which significantly impacts the density and yield of the harvest.

The biology of Fundulus is defined by its extreme environmental tolerance. They possess a rapid developmental cycle, with females depositing eggs in soft mud or vegetation. Their ability to survive in low-oxygen conditions and fluctuating water levels allows them to invade and establish large populations in agricultural irrigation systems during the growing season.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical. As they stir up the sediment, they expose delicate root systems to pathogens and physical stress. Furthermore, in integrated systems, they may outcompete beneficial species or prey upon beneficial organisms necessary for soil health, thus acting as a significant nuisance for commercial fish-rice farmers.

To control Fundulus populations, farmers should implement physical exclusion methods such as fine-mesh screens at water inlets to prevent the entry of larvae and adults. Additionally, controlled drying of fields during specific crop development stages can disrupt the spawning cycles, effectively reducing the pressure of these pests on the cultivated area.
