Pear phylloxera

Aphanostigma piri

Description

Pear phylloxera (Aphanostigma piri) is a specialized pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is a tiny, aphid-like insect that causes significant damage to pear trees by inducing the formation of galls on the foliage, which impairs the tree's ability to photosynthesize effectively.

The host plant range for this pest is limited primarily to Pyrus species. While mature orchards can tolerate some infestation, young trees and nursery stock are highly susceptible. Severe attacks can cause early leaf drop, reduced fruit set, and overall weakening of the tree's health, making it vulnerable to other pathogens and environmental stresses.

The life cycle of Aphanostigma piri is strictly synchronized with the phenology of the pear tree. It overwinters as eggs located in the bark crevices. In early spring, nymphs emerge and settle on the young leaves, causing the development of characteristic galls. These galls provide a protected environment where the subsequent generations feed and reproduce throughout the growing season.

The damage is easily identified by the presence of numerous small galls on the leaves. Initially green, these galls may turn brown or reddish as the season progresses. Heavy infestations lead to distorted leaves that curl and drop prematurely. This stress inhibits the development of fruit buds, resulting in poor crop quality and significantly lower yields in subsequent years.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling pear phylloxera. Key strategies include monitoring orchards during early spring when nymphs are active. Applying systemic insecticides at the bud-burst stage is the most effective chemical intervention. Additionally, removing infested leaves in small orchards and encouraging natural predators can help maintain the population below the economic threshold.
