Description
Systematic position: Grape phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae), often identified as Daktulosphaira conicum in older records, is a member of the insect order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is considered one of the most destructive agricultural pests in viticulture history worldwide.
Affected crops: The insect exclusively targets plants of the genus Vitis. While American vine species have evolved natural defense mechanisms against the pest, European grape varieties (Vitis vinifera) are highly susceptible to root colonization and severe damage.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of phylloxera is remarkably complex, involving both root-dwelling and leaf-dwelling stages. Root forms survive in the soil, feeding on the root system, while leaf forms induce the growth of galls on the underside of vine leaves. The pest undergoes several molts, rapidly multiplying during the growing season.
Damage and economic significance: The primary damage occurs on the roots, where the insect's feeding causes nodule formation (nodosities) and larger swellings (tuberosities). This structural damage blocks the vine's nutrient intake, leading to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and the eventual death of the entire grapevine within several years.
Protection measures: Management of phylloxera is predominantly preventative due to the difficulty of eliminating established soil populations. Strategies include:
- Planting vines grafted onto resistant rootstocks.
- Strict quarantine regulations regarding the transport of nursery stock.
- Regular vineyard monitoring to detect early leaf gall outbreaks.
- Soil chemical treatments or removal of infested vineyard sectors to stop the spread.
