Description

Aphelenchoides composticola is a microscopic, mycophagous nematode species within the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is a well-known pest primarily associated with commercial mushroom cultivation, where it acts as a significant limiting factor for yield productivity by feeding on fungal mycelia.

The primary hosts affected by this nematode are various species of cultivated mushrooms, especially Agaricus bisporus (button mushroom). The infestation occurs throughout the compost substrate, where the nematodes systematically destroy the mycelium network, directly preventing the formation of fruiting bodies.

The biological life cycle of this pest is rapid, often completing within 7 to 10 days under ideal temperature conditions of 20–25°C. Their high motility allows them to spread rapidly through the mushroom beds, facilitated by the moisture films within the compost, making localized infestations quickly expand to the entire growing area.

Visible symptoms of infestation include the degradation of the mushroom mycelium, which loses its characteristic white, vigorous appearance and becomes thin, watery, and gray. Infected areas typically show a complete cessation of mushroom production, and in severe cases, the entire bed may succumb to decay, leading to significant economic losses.

Management strategies rely heavily on rigorous sanitation and heat treatment. Thorough pasteurization of the compost is the most critical step to eliminate existing nematode populations before spawning. Preventive measures include using sterile casing soil, disinfecting equipment, and controlling water quality to avoid introducing the nematode into the growing facility. Regular monitoring and hygienic practices are essential for suppression.
