Rice white tip nematode

The Rice white tip nematode (Aphelenchoides besseyi) is a destructive plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is recognized as a major threat to rice production worldwide and is classified as a quarantine pest in many regions due to its ability to severely reduce yields and contaminate agricultural products.

This nematode infects a wide range of host plants, most notably rice, but also strawberry, millet, sorghum, and various ornamental plants. It resides as an ectoparasite in the developing tissues of the leaf sheath and inside the panicles, where it feeds on plant cells, disrupting nutrient uptake and physiological growth.

The biology of Aphelenchoides besseyi is highly adapted to tropical and subtropical climates, where reproduction is fast and continuous. The life cycle from egg to adult takes approximately one to two weeks under optimal conditions. When the environment becomes dry, these nematodes can enter a state of cryptobiosis, surviving for months in dormant seed or dry plant debris until moisture returns.

The most distinctive symptom of infestation in rice is the "white tip" of the leaves, where the tips become chlorotic, wither, and turn white. In strawberries, the damage manifests as stunted growth, crinkled leaves, and small, malformed fruits, leading to a significant loss of market value and overall productivity.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the cycle of infestation. Recommended strategies include:

• Utilizing nematode-free, certified seeds and planting materials.
• Implementing hot-water seed treatments (typically 50-55°C) to kill nematodes inside the grains.
• Practicing crop rotation with non-host species to reduce soil populations.
• Proper disposal of post-harvest crop residues to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Regular field scouting and implementation of quarantine protocols to prevent further spread.
