Two-spotted flea beetle

The Two-spotted flea beetle (Aphthona bimaculata) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. This species is an oligophagous insect that specializes in feeding on plants of the genus Euphorbia. It is widely distributed across various European regions and parts of Asia, frequently found in habitats where its host plants thrive.

The host range is essentially restricted to the genus Euphorbia. While this insect does not typically attack primary agricultural crops, it is of significant interest in ecological studies and as a potential biological control agent for invasive spurge weeds in rangelands and natural conservation areas.

The lifecycle of this beetle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as an adult in the soil or beneath leaf litter. Upon the arrival of spring, adults emerge to feed on the foliage of host plants. Subsequently, females lay eggs near the base of the stems, leading to subterranean larval development.

The damage caused by this beetle is two-fold. Adults cause characteristic "shot-hole" damage to the leaves by chewing small holes, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capability. Larvae, which live in the soil, feed on the root system, often compromising the plant's ability to take up nutrients and water, leading to stunting or decline.
