Flax flea beetle

Systematic position: The flax flea beetle (Aphthona flaviceps) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This small beetle is a specialized pest that poses a significant threat to specific industrial crops in temperate climate zones.

Host plants: The primary crop damaged by this species is flax (both fiber flax and oilseed flax). Both adults and larvae are highly host-specific to plants of the Linaceae family, making Aphthona flaviceps a dangerous pest in regions where flax cultivation is intensive.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under plant debris along field edges and borders. In the spring, as temperatures rise, they emerge to the surface and begin actively feeding on young flax seedlings. Females lay eggs in the soil near the root zones of host plants. The larvae develop in the soil, feeding on the root system before pupating and eventually emerging as a new generation of beetles.

Damage and pest status: Adult beetles chew numerous small holes in the leaves, resulting in a shot-hole effect, which causes the leaves to wither and leads to the death of young seedlings. A massive infestation during the seedling stage can lead to a complete loss of crop stand density. Larvae feeding on the roots weaken the plants, significantly reducing their vigor and overall resistance to environmental stresses and secondary pathogens.

Protection measures: Effective management relies on a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Early sowing of flax is recommended to avoid peak activity of the pest, along with strict crop rotation and the removal of wild Linaceae weeds. When economic injury levels are exceeded, the application of systemic or contact-stomach insecticides is necessary. Furthermore, seed treatments provide an essential preventative layer against early-season damage.
