Target crops and damage. This pest primarily attacks cereal crops, including wheat and barley, by feeding on the root systems or the base of the stems. By extracting plant sap, the aphids cause severe physiological stress, which manifests as stunted plant growth, chlorosis of the leaves, and significantly reduced grain weight. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial economic losses in field crops.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Aploneura typically involves sexual and asexual reproductive phases. They are known for their ability to form gall-like structures on host plants during certain stages, while subterranean populations feed on roots. Their rapid multiplication rate, especially under favorable temperature and humidity conditions, allows for sudden population explosions across large agricultural tracts.

Economic impact. The economic damage caused by Aploneura is often underestimated because the insects reside near the roots or in the leaf sheaths. Their feeding activities not only deplete the plant's resources but also create entry points for pathogens and viruses. During drought years, the combination of moisture stress and aphid pressure can lead to complete failure in localized patches of the field.

Management strategies. Effective management of Aploneura requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
