Apodia bifractella

Systematic position. Apodia bifractella is a species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae (twirler moths). As a specialized herbivore, it primarily focuses on plants within the Asteraceae family, often establishing populations in wild habitats that can occasionally spill over into cultivated fields.

Host plants. The larvae of this moth are typically associated with plants in the genera Inula (elecampane) and Pulicaria (fleabane). In an agricultural context, they pose a threat to medicinal and ornamental varieties of composite plants. While not a primary pest of major broadacre crops, it may be found on sunflowers or other closely related Asteraceae species in specific regions.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is closely tied to the flowering phenology of the host plants. Adults emerge during the summer months. After mating, females deposit eggs on or near the flower heads. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the receptacle, where they feed on developing floral parts and immature seeds throughout their larval stages before pupating.

Nature of damage and economic importance. Damage is caused by the larvae feeding inside the flower heads (capitula). By consuming the flowers and developing achenes, they directly reduce seed yield and quality. Affected flower heads may show signs of premature decay or stunted development, which is particularly detrimental for crops cultivated for their seeds or medicinal components.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is recommended to control Apodia bifractella. Cultural practices, such as removing crop residues and destroying alternative weed hosts, are essential to disrupt the overwintering cycle. In cases where the infestation threatens significant economic loss, targeted application of contact or systemic insecticides during the budding phase can be effective in reducing larval populations.
