Description
Systematic position: Aproaerema modicella belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Gelechiidae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests of groundnut (peanut) globally, capable of causing significant economic losses in various climatic zones where legume crops are cultivated.
Host plants: The primary host of this pest is the groundnut (Arachis hypogaea). However, it is a polyphagous species that can also infest other legume species, including soybeans, beans, cowpeas, and various wild legumes that act as alternative hosts during the off-season.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Aproaerema modicella is relatively short, usually completing within 3 to 4 weeks depending on environmental conditions. Adult moths are small and nocturnal. Female moths deposit individual eggs on the underside of leaflets. After hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the leaf tissue, creating mines as they feed, before pupating in protected areas like rolled leaves.
Damage and severity: Larvae are the stage responsible for crop damage. By feeding internally on the leaf mesophyll, they destroy the plant's photosynthetic capability. Heavy infestations result in the rapid drying and shedding of leaves, leading to stunted plant growth and poor pod development, which can result in near-total yield failure if left unmanaged.
Control measures: Effective management of the groundnut leaf miner requires an integrated approach:
- use of resistant or early-maturing peanut cultivars;
- proper spacing to prevent microclimates favorable to the pest;
- installation of pheromone traps to monitor and disrupt mating;
- application of systemic insecticides when economic thresholds are reached;
- removal of crop debris to eliminate pupae and overwintering larvae.
