Systematic position: Aptinothrips stylifer is a member of the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Unlike many other thrips, this species is completely apterous (wingless), which reflects its adaptation to a specific niche within the micro-environments of grass structures.
Host crops: This pest primarily affects various grass species (Poaceae). It is commonly found on cereal crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Additionally, it utilizes various wild perennial grasses found in field margins and meadows as alternative hosts to survive throughout the year.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Aptinothrips stylifer consists of egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. The species is characterized by obligate parthenogenesis, meaning females produce offspring without mating. The lack of wings forces them to rely on crawling or being dispersed by wind via plant debris, yet they maintain high population densities.
Damage and harmfulness: The pest resides primarily inside leaf sheaths and near the grain-forming spikelets. By feeding on cell sap, they cause chlorotic spotting and stunted growth of the host plant. Heavy infestations significantly impact grain filling, resulting in shriveled kernels and reduced weight, which can severely compromise the final harvest yield.
Control measures: Management strategies focus on sanitation, such as the removal of volunteer cereals and weeds that harbor the population.
