Arctorthezia

Systematic position. Arctorthezia is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Ortheziidae. These insects are classified as specialized sap-sucking pests, known for their distinct white waxy coverings which provide protection against environmental factors and some chemical treatments.

Host plants. This pest is a polyphage, meaning it attacks a wide variety of plant species. Host plants typically include diverse woody shrubs, coniferous trees, and many ornamental greenhouse species. They are particularly troublesome in managed landscapes and nurseries where they can quickly spread from tree to tree.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Females develop a characteristic white waxy ovisac to protect their eggs. The first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are the primary dispersal stage, as they are mobile and move to the most tender parts of the host plant to begin feeding. The species often overwinters as nymphs in protected crevices of the bark.

Damage and pest status. By feeding on the plant sap, Arctorthezia causes significant physiological stress. The constant extraction of nutrients leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and distorted foliage. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaf surface and severely inhibits photosynthetic activity, often leading to premature leaf drop.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Arctorthezia. Key strategies include:

• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local population density.
• Applying systemic insecticides when crawlers are most active and vulnerable.
• Using horticultural oils to coat and smother the waxy layers of the insects.
• Monitoring plant health and maintaining vigorous growing conditions to allow plants to withstand infestation.
