The greenhouse orthezia (Insignorthezia insignis) is a significant sucking pest belonging to the family Ortheziidae within the order Hemiptera. It is a highly invasive species commonly found in greenhouses, botanical gardens, and indoor collections, where it thrives in protected environments.

This pest has a broad host range, damaging various ornamental and tropical plants such as lantana, chrysanthemum, coleus, citrus, and coffee plants. The insects aggregate in dense colonies on the undersides of leaves, along leaf veins, and on tender stems to feed on plant sap.

The biology of the greenhouse orthezia is characterized by its distinct white, waxy ovisac produced by the female, which protects the eggs. The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Nymphs are mobile during early instars and can easily disperse throughout a plant or to adjacent plants in a greenhouse setting.

The damage caused by these insects leads to yellowing (chlorosis), leaf distortion, and stunted growth. A primary symptom is the secretion of copious amounts of honeydew, which serves as a medium for sooty mold growth, further debilitating the plant by blocking sunlight and restricting gas exchange.

Control strategies must be consistent to achieve eradication. Key practices include thorough sanitation, physical removal of heavy infestations, and the application of systemic insecticides. In integrated pest management programs, the introduction of natural predators, such as specific species of ladybirds or parasitic wasps, can be highly effective in reducing population densities.
