Argopistes is a genus of flea beetles within the family Chrysomelidae (order Coleoptera). These insects are recognized as specialized pests that primarily target olive trees (Olea europaea). Due to their high mobility and ability to feed on both leaves and young shoots, they represent a recurring challenge for olive growers in Mediterranean and subtropical regions.
The biology of Argopistes is characterized by a distinct metamorphosis. Adult beetles are small, convex, and highly active, while the larvae develop within the leaf tissue. This larval mining behavior is a key diagnostic feature, as it causes internal destruction of the leaf mesophyll, which is not immediately visible from the surface during the early stages of infestation.
Regarding the damage caused, adult feeding results in irregular, rounded holes throughout the leaf blades. Simultaneously, the larvae create winding tunnels (mines) that impair the tree's photosynthetic capability. Prolonged or severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, reduced vegetative growth, and a significant decrease in olive yield and quality.
Effective management of Argopistes requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Because the larvae are protected inside the leaves, timing is critical. Chemical control is most effective against adults during their peak activity periods. Growers should prioritize the use of systemic insecticides that can penetrate plant tissues to reach hidden larvae.
Cultural practices are also essential to mitigate damage. These include maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization, irrigation, and pruning to remove infested foliage, which disrupts the life cycle of the pest. Additionally, monitoring the population dynamics using sticky traps helps in making informed decisions about the necessity and timing of corrective treatments.
