Description

The genus Argyresthia belongs to the family Argyresthiidae, commonly known as leaf-mining or fruit-mining moths. These small, slender moths are significant agricultural pests that target a wide range of woody plants, causing direct economic damage to both fruit production and ornamental nurseries.

These pests primarily infest members of the Rosaceae family, including apple, cherry, plum, and pear trees. While some species are foliage miners, many are shoot-borers or fruit-borers, meaning they penetrate the internal tissues of buds, young twigs, or developing fruits, making them difficult to detect until substantial damage is already done.

The life cycle of most Argyresthia species is univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Winter is typically passed in the egg stage or as young larvae tucked within crevices of the bark. Once temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed on developing tissues, often boring directly into buds and expanding shoots.

Damage is characterized by stunted growth, terminal shoot wilting (often referred to as 'shoot flagging'), and the destruction of flower buds. By mining the interior of the shoots, the larvae disrupt the vascular flow, causing the distal part of the stem to die. This reduces overall tree vigor and can significantly diminish the seasonal yield.

Effective management requires a combination of vigilance and targeted action:

  • Pruning and destroying infested shoots early in the season to reduce larval populations.
  • Monitoring flight patterns using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
  • Applying systemic insecticides when young larvae are active, before they bore deep into the wood.
  • Promoting biodiversity in orchards to encourage the presence of parasitic wasps that predate on larvae.
