The apple blossom moth (Argyresthia curvella) is a small moth belonging to the family Yponomeutidae. It is considered a specialized pest in pomology, primarily targeting apple trees. As an agricultural pest, it can cause significant economic losses if the population remains unchecked during the spring growth phase.
The larvae (caterpillars) are responsible for the damage, as they feed on the internal tissues of developing apple buds. By destroying the buds before or during the flowering stage, the moth prevents the formation of fruit, which directly correlates to a substantial reduction in the total harvest of the orchard.
The life cycle of this species typically involves one generation per year. The moths overwinter in the egg stage, with eggs laid in crevices near the buds. As soon as temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge and bore directly into the swelling buds to feed. After completing their development, they pupate, and the adult moths emerge in early summer.
The main symptom of an infestation is the failure of buds to develop properly, followed by browning and drying out of the damaged plant organs. If the pest density is high, the tree may show signs of extensive bud damage, resulting in bare branches that fail to produce leaves or flowers during the critical early season.
Integrated pest management is essential to control the apple blossom moth. Chemical treatments should be applied during the early spring when the larvae are emerging. Additionally, maintaining orchard hygiene, such as scraping old bark and using pheromone traps, helps reduce the population density of this pest.
