Description
Systematic position: The cherry blossom moth (Argyresthia nitidella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Yponomeutidae. This small moth is widely recognized by horticulturists as a pest that specifically targets stone fruit trees in temperate orchards.
Host plants: The primary host plants for this species are cherry and sweet cherry trees. While other species within the genus Prunus can occasionally be affected, cherry trees suffer the most significant economic damage due to the moth's feeding habits on reproductive buds.
Biology and lifecycle: The species has one generation per year. It overwinters as a larva in a tough, silken cocoon located in tree bark crevices or twig forks. In early spring, the larvae emerge and immediately begin to feed on developing buds, subsequently tunneling into the interior of young shoots.
Damage and harmfulness: The larval feeding causes the destruction of the apical buds and the mining of young shoots. This leads to the wilting, yellowing, and eventual necrosis of the terminal parts of the twigs. Severe infestations result in reduced tree vigor, stunted growth, and significant crop loss.
