Dusky slug

Arion subfuscus

Description

The dusky slug (Arion subfuscus) is a terrestrial gastropod mollusk belonging to the order Stylommatophora and the family Arionidae. This pest is widely distributed in gardens, greenhouses, and moist environments where dense vegetation provides optimal shelter and food sources throughout the growing season.

The dusky slug is a polyphagous pest capable of causing significant damage to various crops. It typically feeds on vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, and beans, as well as fruits like strawberries. Young seedlings are particularly vulnerable, and in many cases, the slug can completely defoliate a plant during the night, leading to crop failure.

The biology of Arion subfuscus is characterized by a high reproductive rate, as these slugs are hermaphrodites. They lay clusters of eggs in moist soil or under organic debris. After hatching, the juveniles begin feeding immediately. Their development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with warm and humid weather promoting rapid growth and population explosions.

The damage caused by the dusky slug is distinctive: they consume large, irregular holes in leaves and can hollow out fruits and tubers. Beyond physical destruction, their presence is marked by trails of shiny mucus left on plants and soil. This mucus not only degrades the aesthetic quality of crops but also serves as a vector for pathogens that can cause secondary rotting.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control:

  • Maintaining garden hygiene by removing debris and weeds where slugs hide.
  • Implementing physical barriers, such as copper tape or abrasive mulches like crushed eggshells or grit.
  • Using manual traps to reduce population numbers during the peak activity season.
  • Applying safe, iron phosphate-based molluscicides that target slugs without harming beneficial garden insects or wildlife.
