Description
Aroga velocella, commonly known as the sorrel moth, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This insect is recognized as a specific pest that primarily targets plants within the Polygonaceae family, with a marked preference for cultivated sorrel and rhubarb.
The primary crops affected by this moth are various species of sorrel. The larvae exhibit a mining behavior, boring into the leaf tissues shortly after hatching. This internal feeding pattern makes them difficult to control with contact insecticides once the infestation has reached the inner leaf layers.
The biological cycle of this pest involves several overlapping generations throughout the growing season. The insect typically overwinters in the pupal stage within the soil or amongst plant debris.
