Description

Systematic position. The oak borer (Arrhenodes minutus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Brentidae. It is a specialized pest primarily associated with deciduous tree species, showing a marked preference for oak trees in forest ecosystems.

Host plants and damage. The primary host is the oak tree. Larvae predominantly infest weakened, dying, or recently fallen trees. Furthermore, the insect is a significant concern for the timber industry, as it frequently attacks stored lumber and logs that are left exposed in humid environments.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of this beetle involves complete metamorphosis. Females lay eggs in crevices of the bark or into pre-bored cavities within the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the heartwood, creating extensive tunnels that they backfill with frass. The larval stage is long and directly impacts the structural integrity of the timber.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The tunneling activity of the larvae destroys the wood structure from within. This degradation reduces the commercial value of the timber significantly and creates entry points for secondary pathogens, such as wood-decay fungi. In cases of severe infestation, entire sections of timber can become unusable for industrial purposes.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to minimize losses caused by this pest. The following strategies are recommended:

  • Timely removal of infested and stressed trees to eliminate breeding sites.
  • Rapid extraction and processing of harvested timber to prevent infestation.
  • Debarking of logs during high-risk periods.
  • Application of appropriate insecticides or protective coatings on stored timber stockpiles.
