Description
The vetch seed weevil (lat. Oxystoma pomonae) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Apionidae. This insect is primarily recognized for its destructive impact on the reproductive organs of leguminous plants, affecting both the yield quantity and the quality of harvested seeds.
This pest is particularly known to infest crops such as common vetch, chickling vetch, and various types of clover. By feeding on the internal contents of the seeds, the larvae cause irreparable damage to the embryos, rendering the seed non-viable and unfit for agricultural or commercial purposes.
Regarding its biological cycle, the vetch seed weevil completes one generation per year. Adult weevils overwinter in debris or soil and emerge in the spring to feed on young plant shoots. After mating, females deposit eggs into the developing seed pods, where the hatching larvae feed until they reach the pupation stage.
The economic damage caused by Oxystoma pomonae is often underestimated because the outer shell of the seed may remain intact while the inside is entirely consumed. This leads to hidden losses that often only become apparent during seed cleaning or germination testing, causing significant economic setbacks for farmers.
