Description
Artaxa is a genus of moths belonging to the family Erebidae (subfamily Lymantriinae). These insects are known for their potential to act as significant defoliators, affecting both forest trees and agricultural plantations in various geographical regions.
The primary hosts for Artaxa species include a variety of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Fruit trees, oak, willow, and birch are among the most frequently attacked plants. In cases of outbreaks, the larvae can strip trees of their foliage, leading to widespread damage to forests and commercial orchards.
The biological cycle follows the standard metamorphosis for moths: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs in clusters on leaves or branches, often covered with protective scales. Larvae are characterized by their rapid feeding rate and usually undergo several instars before pupation, which often occurs within a silken cocoon attached to the foliage.
The primary damage is caused by the larval stage. Young caterpillars typically feed on the undersides of leaves, causing skeletonization, while mature larvae consume entire leaf blades, leaving only the primary veins. Severe defoliation impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity, resulting in reduced growth, lowered fruit quality, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests and drought.
