Description
Systematic position. Artaxa guttata belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Erebidae, and subfamily Lymantriinae. As a member of the tussock moth family, this species is recognized as a significant defoliator, capable of impacting both ecological balance and agricultural productivity in various temperate and subtropical regions.
Affected crops. This pest is characterized by its polyphagous nature, feeding on a variety of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Common hosts include orchard fruit trees, poplar species, and willow varieties. While they prefer certain woody plants, they can rapidly expand their feeding territory to secondary host plants when population densities are high.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Artaxa guttata consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females lay clusters of eggs on the underside of host leaves, covering them with hair scales for protection. Larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously, before spinning a silken cocoon in which they pupate. The duration of each stage is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity.

Extensive feeding results in significant defoliation, which stresses the host plant, impairs its ability to store energy for winter, and reduces overall growth.
