Creta geometer
Ascotis cretacea
Description
The creta geometer (Ascotis cretacea) is a moth belonging to the family Geometridae. Known for its distinct appearance, it is classified as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in regions where industrial tea production is prevalent. This species is highly adaptive, allowing it to colonize diverse environments and cause substantial damage to various woody plant species.
The primary hosts of this pest include tea bushes, citrus trees, and several types of deciduous fruit trees. Because of their voracious feeding habits, larvae can quickly strip a plant of its foliage. This leads to reduced plant vigor, diminished crop yields, and, in cases of severe infestation, the death of young seedlings or highly susceptible plant varieties.
The biological cycle of Ascotis cretacea involves multiple developmental stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The insect typically undergoes several generations per year, depending on climatic conditions. The pupal stage occurs in the soil, which is a crucial aspect of its ecology that influences both its survival during winter and the success of control efforts targeting the soil-dwelling pupae.
The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by defoliation. Early-stage caterpillars may only create small holes in leaves, but as they mature, they consume entire leaf blades, leaving only the primary veins. This intensive feeding behavior significantly restricts the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis, leading to metabolic stress and long-term degradation of the plant's structural health.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this geometer moth. Recommended strategies include regular field scouting to identify infestation hotspots, tillage to disrupt pupation sites in the soil, and the application of biological controls such as pheromone-based mating disruption. Chemical intervention with targeted insecticides should be reserved for periods of high pressure to minimize environmental impact and protect beneficial insects.
