Geometer moths
Geometridae
Description
Geometer moths (family Geometridae, order Lepidoptera) are a large group of insects, well-known for their larvae, commonly referred to as "inchworms" or "loopers." This name derives from their unique locomotion, where they move by arching their bodies into a loop due to the reduction of prolegs. Adult moths are typically nocturnal and possess cryptic coloration that provides excellent camouflage against tree bark or leaves.
These pests pose a significant threat to a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. They are frequently found attacking fruit trees such as apple, cherry, and peach. Field crops like soybeans, alfalfa, and fodder beets are also susceptible to infestations. Additionally, Geometer moth larvae can cause substantial damage to ornamental plants like roses and vegetable crops including tomatoes.
The life cycle of Geometridae involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. They typically overwinter as pupae in the soil or as eggs attached to twigs. In the spring, larvae emerge during the bud-break period, beginning their destructive feeding cycle. Depending on the species and geographical climate, they may complete one or multiple generations per year.
Damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which feed on leaves, buds, and sometimes fruits. Initially, they create small holes in leaves, but as they grow, they can defoliate entire branches or plants, leaving only the veins. Heavy infestations lead to severe stress for the plant, reduced vigor, and significant yield losses, especially when the defoliation occurs during critical growth stages.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Geometer moths. Key strategies include cultural practices such as tilling the soil under trees to disrupt pupation, and the use of physical barriers like sticky bands on trunks. In cases of high economic threshold, chemical control using targeted insecticides or biological treatments, such as B. thuringiensis, is recommended during the early larval stages.
