Aspidomorpha is a genus of insects belonging to the subfamily Cassidinae, known as tortoise beetles, within the family Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles) and the order Coleoptera. These beetles are easily recognized by their flattened, shield-like margins that extend over their head and legs, providing an evolutionary advantage for survival on foliage.
The primary host plants for this pest include members of the Convolvulaceae family, most notably sweet potatoes and various wild morning glory species. Due to their host specificity, Aspidomorpha can cause localized yet severe damage to plantations, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where these crops are cultivated extensively.
The life cycle of these beetles includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is particularly unique, as many species exhibit specialized behavior by carrying a fecal shield on their anal fork. This defense mechanism is crucial for deterring predators and parasitoids during the vulnerable growth stages of the insect.
The feeding damage is characterized by window-feeding or complete defoliation of leaves. Adult beetles and larvae graze on the parenchyma of the leaf tissue, leaving behind irregular holes and skeletonized foliage. Persistent feeding reduces the total leaf area available for photosynthesis, leading to stunted plant growth and a significant reduction in tuber size and quality.
