Description

Asterolecanium is a genus of scale insects belonging to the family Asterolecaniidae. These small, sap-sucking pests are often referred to as pit scales due to the characteristic pits or galls they create on the bark and stems of their host plants, which makes them highly specialized in their feeding habits.

The host range of Asterolecanium includes various woody plants, shrubs, and ornamental grasses, most notably oaks and bamboo. Infestations are often detected by observing localized tissue swelling and abnormal growth patterns on the stems rather than the insects themselves, as they blend in perfectly with the host's bark.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, a mobile crawler stage, and a sessile adult stage. The adult females remain stationary and develop a waxy protective test that covers their bodies. This protective layer makes them resistant to many contact insecticides, necessitating precise timing during the active crawler phase to achieve effective control.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily due to the extraction of plant sap and the injection of saliva, which triggers a host plant response. This results in the formation of pits, cankers, and stunted twig growth. In severe cases, high populations can cause dieback of branches, severe dehydration of the plant, and predispose the host to opportunistic diseases.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Asterolecanium. Cultural practices include pruning and destroying heavily infested branches. Chemical control is most successful when systemic insecticides are applied precisely during the crawler emergence period. Monitoring with sticky traps or regular visual inspections is crucial to determine the optimal timing for intervention.
