Fringed scale

Asterolecanium fimbriatum

Description

Systematic position: The fringed scale (Asterolecanium fimbriatum) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Asterolecaniidae. It is a specialized sap-sucking insect that often goes unnoticed due to its small size and tendency to camouflage itself within the bark of its host plants.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets woody plants. Its main hosts include species of oaks, beeches, and various ornamental shrubs. It is frequently observed in forest ecosystems, urban landscaping, and nurseries, where it can cause significant stress to young or weakened specimens.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is closely adapted to host bark characteristics. Females are stationary and protected by a hard, waxy test (scale) which often features a distinctive fringed edge. Reproduction occurs throughout the warmer seasons, starting with the emergence of active, crawlers that can disperse to new branches or be carried by the wind.

Damage and pest status: By feeding on plant sap, the fringed scale causes physical distortion of shoots, yellowing of leaves, and premature leaf drop. Severe infestations result in general decline, stunted growth, and dieback of branches.

  • Reduced aesthetic value of ornamental plants.
  • Lowering of the plant's natural defense systems.
  • Increased susceptibility to secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens.

Control measures: Managing this pest is challenging because the hard scale provides protection against contact chemicals. Control is most effective when targeting the crawler stage. Regular scouting is essential to identify early infestations. Recommended practices include pruning and destroying heavily infested branches, as well as applying systemic insecticides or horticultural oils during the emergence of mobile larvae.
