Asterolecanium notatum

Asterolecanium notatum is a species of scale insect belonging to the family Asterolecaniidae. It is recognized as a specialized pest that primarily targets oak species (Quercus), where it settles on twigs and branches to extract plant sap, affecting the health of the host tree.

The life cycle involves stationary adult females shielded by a waxy test or shell, which is adapted to blend in with the bark of the host tree. The dispersal phase occurs during the crawler stage, where newly hatched larvae move across the bark surface to find optimal feeding sites before settling down to develop further.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily physiological and mechanical. As the insects feed, they inject saliva that triggers tissue proliferation and creates depressions or pits in the bark. This localized deformation disrupts the vascular flow within the branches, potentially leading to stunted growth.

Economic and ecological impact is significant in cases of severe infestation. Heavily infested trees show signs of decline, including dieback of terminal branches, yellowing or premature leaf drop, and overall loss of vigor. This makes the trees more susceptible to secondary stressors, including drought and other pathogenic fungi.
